Kenneth Walker Carries Kansas City to 4-0 in Las Vegas
Kenneth Walker III’s 537 rushing yards have the Chiefs 4-0 after a 30-27 escape in Las Vegas, even as Tyquan Thornton’s dislocated ankle empties the receiving room.
Kenneth Walker III ran for 177 yards and two late touchdowns as Kansas City beat the Raiders 30-27 on Oct. 4 at Allegiant Stadium, lifting the Chiefs to 4-0 and the AFC’s last perfect record. He now leads the NFL with 537 rushing yards.
Patrick Mahomes was 15 of 30 for 225 yards and two scores. The win still needed a kickoff fumble, a 55-yard throw and a cart for Tyquan Thornton, the wide receiver who had just built a career day.
Walker Just Ran Past a 12-Year Mark
Walker carried 22 times for 177 yards, 8.0 per rush, with a 76-yard burst that was the league’s longest run of the season. He caught one pass for 2 yards and scored twice, the second a 22-yard dive at the pylon. Through four games he has 87 carries, 537 yards, 6.2 per attempt and four rushing touchdowns, plus 12 catches for 84 yards and two more scores.
Buffalo’s James Cook sits second at 421 yards after 75 in a loss to New England, which leaves Walker in front by 116. Pro Football Focus posted the four-game rushing list for the last 15 years, and Walker’s 537 sits three yards past DeMarco Murray’s 534 from 2014.

Murray is Kansas City’s running backs coach. The man who set the mark Walker just passed is the one handing him the game plan, a detail that traveled faster than the box score.
WALKER’S FIRST FOUR GAMES
| Date | Opp. | Att | Yds | Avg | TD | Long |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sep. 14 | vs DEN | 23 | 173 | 7.5 | 1 | 60 |
| Sep. 20 | vs IND | 24 | 117 | 4.9 | 0 | 19 |
| Sep. 27 | @ MIA | 18 | 70 | 3.9 | 1 | 22 |
| Oct. 4 | @ LV | 22 | 177 | 8.0 | 2 | 76 |
| Total | 87 | 537 | 6.2 | 4 | 76 |
Kansas City is averaging 162.3 rushing yards a game, third in the league, and 29.5 points, sixth. The 2025 club finished eighth-worst on the ground. This one hands Walker the ball and lets Mahomes play off play-action, which is why a 15-for-30 night still ended 4-0.
The March Signing That Changed Kansas City’s Offense
Walker signed with Kansas City on March 9, 2026, on a three-year deal worth up to $45 million, with $28.7 million guaranteed and an average of $14.35 million. Seattle, weeks after he won Super Bowl LX MVP, did not tag him. He was the first running back to take that trophy since Terrell Davis in Super Bowl XXXII, after 161 yards from scrimmage on 27 carries in a win over New England.
He had 417 scrimmage yards and four touchdowns in three playoff games once Zach Charbonnet tore an ACL. Kansas City bought the version of Walker that Seattle only fully unleashed in January. On Oct. 1 the league named him AFC Offensive Player of the Month for a September in which he had 360 rushing yards, 82 receiving yards and four touchdowns.
WALKER THROUGH FOUR WEEKS
- Rushing lead: 537 yards, 116 ahead of Cook.
- Per carry: 6.2 yards, with six runs of 20-plus.
- Broken tackles: a league-high 41 broken tackles through September, including 10-plus in each of his first three games.
- Win streak: 14 straight, dating to Nov. 23 with Seattle, including the postseason.
He is already more than halfway to last year’s 1,027 rushing yards and closing on his career high of 1,050 from 2022. Multiple touchdowns in three of four games will do that. OPOY talk in week 4 is usually noise. When the back is this far in front, and his position coach is the last man to open a season like this, the noise has a stat sheet under it.
Two Touchdowns Landed 19 Seconds Apart
Kansas City scored 20 points in the fourth quarter after a blank third. Walker’s 76-yard run on the last snap of the third, tracked down by nickel Taron Johnson at the 8, set up an 8-yard Mahomes-to-Thornton touchdown and a 17-13 lead. It was the first time Las Vegas had allowed a fourth-quarter score all season.
Matt Gay answered with 44- and 48-yard field goals for a 19-17 Raiders lead with 4:53 left. Then the game compressed into a two-minute span Kansas City will keep and Las Vegas will replay.
THE 19-SECOND SWING
- 3:35 left: Mahomes hits Thornton for 55 yards on 3rd-and-5. Rookie free safety Treydan Stukes lands on Thornton’s left ankle at the 5.
- 3:21 left: Walker walks in from the 2 for a 23-19 lead. The two-point pass sails high.
- 3:10 left: Linebacker Jeffrey Bassa punches the kickoff out of Dareke Young’s hands near the 20. Jack Cochrane recovers.
- Next snap: Walker sweeps right and dives inside the pylon from 22 yards, 30-19, the second score in 19 seconds.
Kirk Cousins still had an answer. He scrambled away from R. Mason Thomas and threw 20 yards to Brock Bowers with 1:46 left, then hit Cody White for two. Xavier Worthy recovered the onside kick. Matt Araiza’s 52-yard punt pinned Las Vegas at its 1 with 1:16 to go and no timeouts. Cousins moved to midfield before George Karlaftis hit his arm and Xavier Nwankpa intercepted.
What the Fourth-Down Gamble Cost Las Vegas
First-year coach Klint Kubiak took the points off the board on the opening drive of the second half. Gay had made a 41-yarder that would have made it 16-10, but Kansas City was flagged for illegal formation. Kubiak accepted it, going for it on 4th-and-2 from the Chiefs’ 18. Cousins’ pass to running back Ashton Jeanty fell incomplete, and the score stayed 13-10.
We were going to be aggressive going into the game. I don’t regret it. I regret not getting it.
Klint Kubiak, Raiders head coach, postgame
Cousins, who finished 31 of 52 for 365 yards, two touchdowns and the late interception, called it one of the plays he would think about on the drive home. Later, on another 4th-and-2 with 4:53 left and the Raiders down 17-16, Kubiak kicked the 48-yarder instead. He said he wanted points after falling short the first time.
MATT GAY’S NIGHT
- 32 yards: 10-7 late in the first half.
- 48 yards: 13-10 as the half expired, after a holding call on Nohl Williams.
- 41 yards: good, then wiped for the 4th-and-2 that failed.
- 44 and 48 yards: 17-16, then 19-17 with 4:53 to play.
Las Vegas outgained Kansas City 437 yards to 399 and still lost the turnover margin 2-0. Jeanty had 15 carries for 58 yards. The Raiders as a team ran for 72 yards at 2.8 per carry. Bowers, playing through illness, caught six passes for 86 yards and the late score. The tight end group of Bowers, Michael Mayer and Ian Thomas combined for 16 catches, 200 yards and two touchdowns, including Thomas’ 27-yard opener, his first score since 2020. Maxx Crosby had half a sack and five hits on Mahomes. It was not enough once Walker found the edge.
Mahomes Went 15 of 30 and Still Owns Las Vegas
Mahomes won his 99th regular-season game and improved to 7-0 at Allegiant, six starts against the Raiders plus Super Bowl LVIII. Andy Reid is 7-1 in the building, which opened in 2020, and now holds the most coaching wins there after breaking a tie with Josh McDaniels and Antonio Pierce at six. Asked last week about the record, Reid said he did not know and did not care.
The night was not clean. Kansas City converted a fake punt from Araiza on the opening series, then turned it over on downs at midfield when Crosby and Adam Butler stuffed Walker. Thornton’s 2-yard touchdown tied it at 7. Harrison Butker’s 28-yarder made it 10-10 after a 42-yard Thornton catch. The Chiefs managed 18 yards in the third quarter before the 76-yard run. Mahomes still found Thornton in single coverage for 55 yards with the game on 3rd-and-5, which is the version of him this stadium keeps seeing.
Travis Kelce’s first catch was the 1,095th of his career, moving him past former Raiders receiver Tim Brown (1,094) for seventh all-time. He finished with 1,096. Cris Carter (1,101) and Marvin Harrison (1,102) are next. It was a quiet line in a loud box score.
Thornton’s Ankle Turns a Career Day Cold
Thornton caught five passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns, both career highs, before Stukes came down on his left foot. He pointed, stood on the right foot, then saw the left one and went back down. Players from both teams knelt. An air cast went on. The cart came. Team doctors put the ankle back in place. He left the stadium on crutches, flew home with the club, and is out indefinitely pending more tests and a second opinion.
It sucks that he hurt his ankle on that play, but it was a big play for us.
Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs quarterback, postgame
Reid said the ankle “doesn’t look good.” Rashee Rice had already exited in the first quarter with a right hamstring after a 7-yard catch. Reid called that one a tweak. Rice and Thornton had combined for 24 catches on 31 targets for 409 yards and three scores through four weeks. Xavier Worthy’s 41-yard grab was the other deep shot that kept the offense moving.
WHAT WE KNOW
- Thornton: dislocated left ankle, reduced by team doctors, carted, out indefinitely.
- Rice: right hamstring in the first quarter, did not return.
- Walker: 22 carries, no fumbles, two scores after the 55-yard catch.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Thornton’s timetable: MRI and a second opinion were set for the morning after the game; no public result yet.
- Rice for Week 6: a tweak can be a week or a month, and Reid did not put a date on it.
Mahomes said it was tough because those players put in the work, and he had been in that spot last year. Kansas City will spend the open week finding out how much of the passing game is still standing.
The Bye Arrives With the AFC’s Last Perfect Record
The Chiefs are off in Week 5, then host the 0-4 Chargers on Oct. 18. The Raiders, 3-1, visit New England. Minnesota and San Francisco are also 4-0 in the NFC, so three perfect records remain, and only one of them is in the AFC West.
Cousins’ seven-game winning streak, which included his last four starts with Atlanta, is over. Kubiak told CBS at halftime, “We’re winning. We’re going to win the game.” For three quarters, he was close. Walker’s 76-yard run, Thornton’s 55-yard catch and the kickoff fumble were the three snaps that turned a 3-0 house into a 4-0 road team.
Kansas City planted its flag on top of the division with a back Seattle let walk in March. The bill came due on the other side of the formation, and the bye is now a medical week as much as a rest week.
