Delta Adds Philadelphia Service to Its Biggest LAX Schedule
Delta starts daily LAX-Philadelphia flights on June 7, 2027, using finished gates to add times while United still leads international traffic.
Delta Air Lines will start a daily Los Angeles-Philadelphia nonstop on June 7, 2027, using an Airbus A321neo. The same Sept. 18, 2026 plan adds extra daily round trips on seven existing LAX routes and restores Monterey with two flights a day from Dec. 19, 2026.
American still flies that transcon alone, with six to eight nonstops a day. Delta is not matching that clock. It is using a finished Terminal 2 and 3 campus to put more useful times on the board, keep high-fare customers inside SkyMiles, and feed two Delta One Lounges while United still carries more international passengers at LAX.
A Daily Airbus to Philadelphia, at Last
The new flight is a classic transcon pattern: westbound in the morning, eastbound overnight. Delta listed a 7 a.m. ET departure from Philadelphia International Airport that arrives at LAX at 10 a.m. PT, and a 9:40 p.m. PT departure from Los Angeles that lands at 5:50 a.m. ET. Tickets go on sale Sept. 19, 2026.
The jet is a 194-seat A321neo with 20 First seats, 42 Comfort seats, and 132 Main seats. That is a domestic first-class cabin, not a lie-flat Delta One transcon. For Los Angeles travelers who already buy Delta across the rest of the country, it closes a hole. For Philadelphia travelers, it is the first time they can fly to LAX without using American or connecting over Atlanta, Minneapolis, or Salt Lake City.
American treats Philadelphia as a major hub and its main transatlantic gateway, with more than 120 cities beyond the local market. Six to eight daily LAX banks are how it protects that franchise. One Delta trip will not break those banks. It will put a second set of fares, elite-qualifying miles, and upgrade inventory into a market that has had only one network carrier on the nonstop.
Route watchers had been waiting for this city pair. After Delta moved up Los Angeles-Newark service into April 2027, industry tracker JonNYC flagged a Philadelphia nonstop as the logical follow-on, with Washington Dulles not far behind. Dulles is still rumor. Philadelphia is now on the sale date.
Seven Routes Gain One Extra Round Trip
The Philadelphia line is the headline. The working change for people who already fly Delta from LAX is one more daily round trip on seven routes, phased in from April through July 2027. Each add is a second, fifth, third, or eighth departure, not a new dot on the map, which is how corporate accounts and connecting passengers actually use a West Coast station.
THE SEVEN LAX FREQUENCY ADDS
| Route | Daily flights now | Daily flights after the add | Extra trip starts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raleigh-Durham | 1 | 2 | April 12, 2027 |
| Boston | 4 | 5 | May 6, 2027 |
| San Diego | 4 | 5 | June 7, 2027 |
| Cincinnati | 1 | 2 | July 11, 2027 |
| Houston Intercontinental | 2 | 3 | July 11, 2027 |
| San Antonio | 2 | 3 | July 11, 2027 |
| Seattle | 7 | 8 | July 11, 2027 |
Boston and Seattle are dense business markets where a fifth or eighth departure is the difference between making a meeting and overnighting. Houston is United’s fortress, so a third Delta trip is a share fight. Cincinnati and Raleigh sit on Delta’s older eastern map and become more usable when they are not one-and-done. San Diego is a short-haul shuttle that rewards frequency more than aircraft size.
Monterey is a different product. Twice-daily LAX service on a Delta Connection Embraer 175 begins Dec. 19, 2026, with a same-day daily Salt Lake City-Monterey flight on the same type. Delta pitched Carmel-by-the-Sea, the Monterey Peninsula, and Big Sur, and noted the timing ahead of one of golf’s biggest championships in summer 2027. United already flies the coast hop. Delta is restoring it as a local trip with a second hub attached, not as transcon metal.
Delta Can Grow Because the Terminal Is Done
The schedule dump is possible because the ground is finished. Delta’s $2.3 billion Sky Way project with Los Angeles World Airports turned Terminals 2 and 3 into one connected campus, with more wayfinding, security processing, and room to keep adding flights. Delta One customers already get a private check-in flow and dedicated TSA screening in Terminal 3.
Courtney Moore, chief revenue and experience officer at Los Angeles World Airports, tied the airline adds to the city’s own rebuild. “Los Angeles shapes, transforms, and influences the world, and LAX is proud to be the gateway connecting travelers to our city,” she said. “Our airline partners’ investment in connectivity helps strengthen Los Angeles’ position as a leading global destination.”
That campus is also why the lounge plan can run ahead of the flying. LAX is the first airport in Delta’s network with two Delta One Lounges. Phase 1 of the Terminal 2 room opened June 30, 2026, as a 4,000-square-foot space for 75 guests, with three showers, four cabana-style bathrooms, and table-service dining. An 11,000-square-foot Sky Club is due in Terminal 2 in 2027. By 2028 Delta wants four lounge spaces across the two terminals, totaling more than 60,000 square feet and more than 1,000 seats.
Empty lounge seats are a cost. Extra Boston, Seattle, Houston, and San Diego times, plus a Philadelphia redeye that delivers people into an East Coast business morning, are how those rooms get used on days when the A350s to Asia and Australia are not the only premium departures.
United Still Carries the International Lead
Delta will say it is Los Angeles’ No. 1 airline in summer 2027, with more flights, more seats, and more premium seats than anyone else at LAX. Cirium already had the carrier on pace to grow total LAX departures by roughly 9% in the first half of 2027, before this package landed. The passenger file for 2026 so far still shows a tight three-way split, and it shows where Delta does not lead.
LAX PASSENGERS, JANUARY THROUGH JULY 2026
| Airline | Passengers | Share | Domestic | International |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delta | 8,353,305 | 19.67% | 7,631,277 | 722,028 |
| United | 7,499,204 | 17.66% | 6,317,343 | 1,181,861 |
| American | 6,819,546 | 16.06% | 6,083,350 | 736,196 |
Los Angeles World Airports’ January through July 2026 traffic counted 42,476,002 passengers through the airport. Delta’s 8,353,305 people give it a 19.67% share, ahead of United at 17.66% and American at 16.06%. On international traffic the order flips. United carried 1,181,861 international passengers, 459,833 more than Delta’s 722,028, about 64% more. American, at 736,196, also edged Delta on that slice. Revenue operations follow the passenger rank: Delta 61,364 (19.81%), United 55,980 (18.07%), American 54,741 (17.67%).
United still has the larger Pacific operation from LAX and has pointed to more long-haul flying in 2027, including Osaka. Andrew Nocella, United’s chief commercial officer, was already treating the airport as a fight that does not end with one schedule season.
It’s a very competitive marketplace, and we’re in it to win it as well. But I suspect it will be very competitive for the foreseeable future.
Andrew Nocella, chief commercial officer, United Airlines, on the July earnings call
Delta’s domestic weight is how it stays first in total people without winning the long-haul count. The new Philadelphia flight and the seven extra round trips thicken that domestic side. They do not, by themselves, take the Pacific away from United.
Why the Philly Flight Leaves After Dark
The eastbound trip leaves LAX at 9:40 p.m. PT and reaches Philadelphia at 5:50 a.m. ET, a redeye that puts passengers on the ground for a full East Coast workday. The westbound leaves Philadelphia at 7 a.m. ET and is on the ground in Los Angeles at 10 a.m. PT, in time for afternoon meetings and for connections that do not need an evening Asia departure.
THE PHILADELPHIA CLOCK
- Westbound: 7 a.m. ET from PHL, 10 a.m. PT arrival at LAX, daily from June 7, 2027.
- Eastbound: 9:40 p.m. PT from LAX, 5:50 a.m. ET arrival at PHL the next morning.
- Cabin: 194 seats on an A321neo, with 20 First, 42 Comfort, and 132 Main.
That timing is a local transcon clock, not a tight Asia bank. Many long-haul Pacific departures leave Los Angeles in the evening, so a 10 a.m. arrival from Philadelphia means a long sit for Hong Kong, Manila, or Melbourne. The value is O&D traffic between two large business cities, SkyMiles customers who will no longer detour over Atlanta, and a fare file that American no longer sets alone. One daily trip is still a small hammer. It is large enough to make corporate travel managers ask for a Delta option they did not have.
Manila Turns Daily on the Same June Date
June 7, 2027, is doing three jobs on the same calendar. It is the Philadelphia launch. It is the day San Diego goes to five daily flights. It is also the day Los Angeles-Manila steps up from three weekly trips to daily service on an Airbus A350-900 with 40 Delta One seats, after a March 28, 2027 start. Delta will be the only U.S. carrier on that Philippines nonstop, on a route Philippine Airlines already flies.
THE BUILD TO SUMMER 2027
- Oct. 25, 2026: Auckland returns to daily from LAX.
- Nov. 21, 2026: Vancouver service resumes.
- Dec. 19, 2026: Los Angeles-Monterey starts twice daily on an Embraer 175; Salt Lake City-Monterey starts daily.
- Dec. 22, 2026: Melbourne moves to daily for the peak period, joining Sydney and Brisbane.
- March 28, 2027: Manila starts three times weekly on an A350-900.
- April 12, 2027: Raleigh-Durham goes to two daily; Newark service is due the same month.
- June 7, 2027: Philadelphia starts daily; San Diego goes to five daily; Manila moves to daily flights on June 7.
- July 11, 2027: Cincinnati, Houston, San Antonio, and Seattle add their extra trips.
Hong Kong and Shanghai are already in the LAX set. Delta says it now reaches 25 international cities from Los Angeles and offers one-stop access to more than 100 countries with partners. International flying from LAX uses the A350-900. Domestic Delta One still shows up on selected routes such as Honolulu, Maui, Kona, New York-JFK, Boston, and Atlanta. The Philadelphia A321neo is not in that lie-flat group. Passengers who want a suite on that city pair will still be shopping American, or connecting.
The Lounge Build-Out Runs Through 2028
At the summer 2027 peak, Delta and its partners plan more than 200 daily departures to nearly 70 cities, and Delta says it will be the only airline at LAX with multiple daily flights in all of the airport’s top 10 markets. That is the scale the new lounge rooms are built for, and it is a different figure from Cirium’s roughly 9% rise in total first-half 2027 departures, which counts a season rather than a peak day.
LAX GROUND PRODUCT, 2026 TO 2028
- Sky Way: A $2.3 billion rebuild of Terminals 2 and 3 into one connected campus with Los Angeles World Airports.
- Delta One Lounges: Two rooms now, the only airport in the system with that pair; the Terminal 2 Phase 1 room is 4,000 square feet and 75 seats.
- Sky Club: An 11,000-square-foot club due in Terminal 2 in 2027, in a space closed since 2024.
- 2028 target: Four lounge spaces, more than 60,000 square feet, more than 1,000 seats, as Los Angeles hosts the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
More than 4,500 Delta employees are based in the Los Angeles area. The airline is an inaugural Founding Partner of the LA28 Games and the official airline of Team USA. Amy Martin, vice president of network planning, framed the Monterey and LAX adds as a West Coast commitment rather than a single city-pair stunt.
We’re continuing to invest in more ways for customers to experience everything California has to offer. With new service to Monterey from both Los Angeles and Salt Lake City, alongside our continued growth at LAX, we’re creating more opportunities for customers to connect to the places they want to go while building on our long-term commitment to Los Angeles and the West.
Amy Martin, vice president of network planning, Delta Air Lines
The Philadelphia nonstop will not out-fly American, and the extra Seattle and Boston times will not out-fly United across the Pacific. They give Los Angeles customers more hours on one carrier, from a terminal that is already built, while two lounge rooms and a daily Manila A350 wait for the connecting and local traffic those hours are meant to catch. Tickets for Philadelphia go on sale Sept. 19, 2026.
